$10,000 Sign of the Arrow Melissa Scholarship Awarded
July 01, 2008

Wisconsin Delta Britanny Dunn has been awarded the Sign of the Arrow Melissa Scholarship in the amount of $10,000 for the 2008-2009 academic year.

The Sign of the Arrow Melissa Scholarship was created and endowed by the Sign of the Arrow/St. Louis Alumnae Club in memory of Missouri Beta Melissa Gail Aptman.  Melissa was murdered in 1995, just two weeks before her graduation from Washington University in St. Louis.  The scholarship was created not only in memory of Melissa, but also to remember and celebrate her life and commitment to community service.

The Sign of the Arrow Melissa Scholarship provides for an undergraduate scholarship of up to $10,000.  The scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate member of Pi Beta Phi entering her senior year, who displays exemplary community service.

Ms. Dunn is an ideal recipient for this 2008-2009 scholarship award. In her community Brittany has clearly demonstrated her belief that service is important. Through her work with Hunger Clean-Up, Make-a-Difference Day, Cross-Trainers Academy, Hope House, Habitat for Humanity, and other service efforts, Brittany has been able to reflect on her life.  “It breaks my heart when I hear people refer to community service as a chore, because it is through my community service efforts that I have found my true path in life which is serving others.”
